No one is higher.
“He will be great, and will be called Son of the Highest” Luke 1:32; NKJV, the angel told Mary.
He is as high as high gets.
Son of the Highest is like the title God Most High.
The wonder of such an announcement must have seized Mary’s heart like the breath taking view from a mountain top.
Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor ruled the world from his vantage point. The Roman senate bestowed on him the name Augustus or “Exalted One.” Venerated as a god, his power extended far beyond Rome’s borders. But in reality, Augustus was but a little fish in a very big pond.
Because no one is higher than God Most High.
Caesar Augustus decreed his new tax plan designed by God to bring Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. Taxes in the old days were a lot easier than nowadays.
As Augustus grew more and more exalted, Jesus, Son of the Highest “…did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.” Phil 2:6-9; ESV.
The unfathomable incarnate God mystifies rule and authority, confounds definition and baffles understanding.
It confirms even while wrapped in swaddling clothes, the pinnacle belongs to the Son of the Highest.
