Picking a baby’s name is a big deal. Seriously. Our third daughter was three days old before we agreed that Charity she would be for all eternity.
Mary and Joseph didn’t have that dispute.
To Joseph: “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matt. 1:21; NKJV.
To Mary: “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.” Luke 1:31; NKJV.
What’s in a name? A lot.
The name Jesus actually means Savior. Jeshua is Hebrew meaning “the Lord is Salvation.” Christos or Christ means Anointed One, the equivalent of the Hebrew word for Messiah.
The heavenly forces, events of nations, ripeness of time belonged to one child named Jesus, born in Bethlehem.
After a night of anguish, Joseph took Mary to be his wife as the angel commanded.
“…And did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.”
The Lord is Salvation, Anointed One, Messiah opened filmy eyes, gulped oxygen, and pushed His way from a birth canal and into human hands.
Joseph, put into an unimaginable story, chose honor and obedience, protection and belief.
“And he called His name Jesus.” Matt. 1:25; NKJV.
Jesus, the Babe, accustomed to glory opened His eyes to search the eyes of his earthly father.
