There are several ways to say “good-bye” in Italian. If you meet on the street and the setting is informal, “ciao” serves as friendly “Hi,” and “Bye.”
“A presto,” tossed at someone means, “see you soon.”
If you are in a more formal setting, “Arrivederci” means “goodbye,” or “until next time.”
Ah… but “Addio” holds a more serious tone. It means literally, “I commend you to God.” It’s used in final or formal farewells.
It’s August, and it seems like a great month for a “ciao.” Something like “a presto,” might be pushing it because tomorrow I plan on taking a blog-break for a few weeks. I would miss you if I’d say, “Addio,” and “Arrivederci” feels too formal for such good friends as you all.
