21 Days to Christmas: Deliverer

Christmas commercials, jingles, and reindeer are pleasant interruptions to sour evening news. Current events shine stadium lights on our culture’s rampant sin. World rulers add a sense of insecurity and fear. We long for deliverance.

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit…”

Joseph had plenty to be afraid about. Roman rule and religious legalistic fervor permeated their day. Herod, had no desire for a rival King of the Jews, and Mary, one who found favor with God, likely became fodder for the kind of prevalant gossip we hear from our daily news.

“…She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matt. 1:20-21; NASB.

Into that world a promised Deliverer was born.

He came like any other baby, into a messy society with neither shield nor sword. He didn’t run for office. He didn’t get any likes on social media. No one tweeted his arrival.

Today like then we need His deliverance desperately.

He breaks sin’s enslavement and brings true liberation. Jesus came clothed with the weakness of flesh, but He lived in victory.

By the hands of his deliverers the young Deliverer grew.
